Usage
This template is for usage in track and field articles to convert athlete performances from feet and inches to metres. It is for use in track and field athlete biographies, lists of statistical records, or other such appropriate articles.
Track and field performances in the late 18th and early 19th century were often recorded in imperial units, and the practice continues in low-level meetings in countries where imperial units predominate.
IAAF rules stipulate that internationally acceptable performances should be recorded in metres, regardless of the typical units of measurement used in that location. To convert non-standard imperial-measured performances into an IAAF-standard metric one, accuracy of performances in feet and inches is rounded down to the nearest whole quarter-inch and the following conversion is rounded down to the nearest centimetre.
Examples
The template has two fields, which should be the distance in feet (1) and inches (2), entered within the template following a vertical bar ( | ). The inches field accepts decimal numbers (e.g. 1.34) but will always round down that decimal to the nearest quarter of an inch.
